Joints Flashcards
Synarthroses
immovable
amiphiarthroses
slightly movable
diathroses
freely movable
gliding joint
relatively flat joint surfaces. some movement possible by gliding or twisting
hinge joint
allows movement around one axis
ball and socket joint
allows movement around multiple axes.
saddle joint
two reciprocally concave/convex surfaces. allows movement to occur around perpendicular axis
condyloid joint
modified ball and socket allowing movement around two perpendicular axes. passive movement may occur around a third axis
ellipsoid joint
similar to ball and socket but with ellipsoid surfaces. movement can only occur around two perpendicular axis
fibrous joint
bones are connected by dense connective tissues
examples: sutures, gomphosis, sydesmosis
sutures
narrow fibrous joints found where bones of the skull meet
gomphosis
fibrous joint where a peg fits into a socket. found where roots of teeth are held in place
sydesmosis
fibrous joints united by larger connective tissue e.g. ligament between radius and ulna
cartilaginous joint
a joint where bones are entirely joined by cartilage, either hyaline cartilage or fibrocartilage
example: synchondroses, symphysis
sychondroses
bones united by continuous layer of hyaline cartilage. present at epithesial growth plates
