Joint Morphology Flashcards
Joint definition
Regions where adjacent bones are capped and held firmly together by other connective tissue
3 types of joints
Fibrous, cartilaginous and synovial
Two types of fibrous joints
Sutures, synchondroses
Sutures explained and example
Allow no movement, bones held together by thin layers of dense connective tissue with osteogenic cells. Between skull bones
Synchondroses explained and example
Allow more movement- interosseous membrane, distal tibial-fibular joint
Two types of cartilaginous joint
Syndesmoses and symphyses
Syndesmoses explained and example
Bones joint by dense connective tissue only, posterior region of the sacroiliac joint
Symphyses explained and example
Thick pad of fibrocartilage between thin articular cartilage, pubic symphyses and intervertebral discs
Synovial joint structure
Capsule of dense connective tissue that maintains proper alignment of the bones.
Capsule encloses sealed joint cavity.
Joint cavity contains synovial fluid.
Joint cavity lined by specialised connective tissue called the synovial membrane.
