Joining Metal Flashcards
What does tig and mig stand for
- Tungsten inert gas
* metal inert gas
Why is flux used
It is used to prevent oxidisation when heat is applied and is used to keep surfaces clean
How is the heat for tig and mig welding generated
Gases are mixed which can produce 3500 degrees which meets the two surfaces. In MIG welding a continuous wire electrode is fed through the torch. In TIG welding, non– consumable electrodes generate heat which then requires a separate rod to form the joint
Why is a shield gas used and what is a common gas
A shield gas is used to prevent any oxidisation due to high temperatures and reaction with air ( Argon )
What is an alternative name for hard soldering
Silver soldering
Why can’t metal that has been painted be welded
Because paint is an insulator so it forms a seal which would wreck the weld and welding only works if it has a clean surface
