Jesus The Miracle Worker Flashcards
Significance of a man with an evil spirit
This is the first miracle in marks gospel
The world at that time thought spirits could posses people and cause mental and physical illnesses
The evil spirit recognised Jesus calling him ‘gods holy messenger’
Contest between good and evil - Jesus showed authority and he won
The people didnt recognise who Jesus was, but news spread
Significance of ‘Jesus heals many people’
The fact their mother in law immediately started waiting on them shows how miraculous the speed of her recovery was.
Jesus broke the law by helping her on the sabbath (you could only help people if their life was at risk)
Jesus wanted people to follow him for his teachings not his miracles (silenced demons)
A man with a dreaded skin disease - significance
People thought it was contagious and treated lepers as outcasts
Jesus touched the man - this would have shocked people because touching a sick man would make you ‘unclean’, Jesus didnt like this rule because it separated people
The priest was the only person who could make a person clean
The messianic secret - tell no one
Significance of a paralysed man
The beginning of conflict between Jesus and the religious leaders
Jesus was impressed by the faith of the fur friends
The Pharisees believed Jesus was guilty of blasphemy - only god can forgive sins , Jesus was claiming to be equal to god
This is the only time Jesus claims to have authority to forgive sins
Significance of a man with a paralysed hand
Pharisees were looking for evidence to prove Jesus wrong
It was against jewish law to heal on the sabbath unless a persons life was in danger
Jesus claimed healing on the sabbath was right to help someone in need
The mans faith wasn’t mentioned
Significance of jairus daughter
Jesus had such a reputation as a miracle worker that even an official had faith in Jesus
Clearly not all religious leaders were against Jesus
Shows that Jesus has power over death
Significance of a woman with a haemorrhage
Her condition made her ‘unclean’ preventing her from joining in jewish festivals and ceremonies
She was obviously ashamed and tried to touch Jesus cloak secretly
Jesus addressed her with a term of deep respect ‘my daughter, your faith has made you well’
Significance of strong-Phoenician daughter
News of Jesus miracles had clearly spread to gentile areas
The term dog was a common description for gentiles at that time
Jesus was testing her but happy with her response
Woman where second class citizens so they where despised by jewish men- this didnt matter to Jesus
The kingdom of god is open to everyone. The gospel is not just for the Jews but for everyone - universalism
Significance of a boy with an evil spirit
People where surprised the disciples couldn’t help the boy
Story talks a lot about faith - the disciples lack of faith and the fathers faith
Some people believe that without faith miracles aren’t possible
Jesus told the disciples they needed to pray showing the faith they need is in god
Symptoms were also the same as epilepsy, this may have been mistaken for demonic possession. Regardless te boy was still cured and there’s no cure for epilepsy today
Examples of outcasts /marginalised people
People who worked for the romans
People with illness - they thought god was punishing them
Disabled men where not allowed into the men’s part of the temple
Jewish women did not have the same rights as men
Outcasts / sinners were seen to be unclean
Those with diseases such ass leprosy were avoided as it was seen as contagious
