Jesus Christ establishes the Church Flashcards
FOUNDRESS of the Congregation of the Dominican Sisters of St. Catherine of Siena
In the service of the SICK, POOR, and YOUNG
M. Francisca Del Espiritu Santo
Comes from the Greek word “Apostolos”, which means “to be sent”
A messenger and an authorized representative of the sender.
Apostle
Jesus called him “Cephes”, meaning “rock” upon whom Jesus built his Church.
To him were given the keys of heaven. He was also the spokesman for the disciples. He became the first Pope.
Peter
He was Peter’s brother, and also a fisherman like him.
Originally he was a disciple of Jone the Baptist.
He was the one who spotted the young boy with the five loaves and two fishes in the event of the Miracle of the Loaves. [Jn 6:5-10]
Andrew
His name means “son of thunder”.
Very little is mentioned about him in the scriptures.
Bartholomew
He is the older brother of John. They were sons of Zebedee.
They were especially close to Jesus as indicated by their presence at the transfiguration [Mat 17:1-2], and Gethsemane [Mat 26:37].
He was the first of the twelve to become a martyr.
James the Great
Brother of James, and was called the “Beloved apostle”.
He was the closest to Jesus at the last supper [Jn13:23], the only apostle present at the Crucifixion in Cavalry [Jn 19:26-27]
John[The beloved]
✔ He is the brother of the apostle Thaddeus.
✔ Very little was written of him
James the lesser
He was a brother of James the younger.
He was one of the very little-known apostles and lived in Galilee.
Judas Thaddeus
The only Apostle who did not come from Galilee.
His special interest was money, so he was in charge of the common fund of the apostles.
He betrayed Jesus for thirty pieces of silver and afterward hanged himself.
Judas Iscariot
He was a publican or tax collector.
He wrote the Gospel that bears his name.
Matthew
Philip came from Bethsaida, the town from which Peter and Andrew came [john 1:44]
The likelihood is that he, too, was a fisherman.
In the listing of the apostles, Philip and Bartholomew were always paired.
Philip
He was a Canaanite and a member of a radical, violent group bitterly opposed to Roman domination of Palestine, probably until his conversion to Christianity.
Simon
He is better known as the “doubting apostle”, the title he earned because of his refusal to believe that the resurrected Christ appeared to the apostles.
