Jekyll Main Quotations Flashcards
Analyse the quotation - “Every ____ of capacity and _________”
Mark, kindness
Hyperbole
Shows how society views Jekyll as superior to Hyde as he is of a higher class, which could be a deeper attack on how society views appearance and how everyone is capable of sin, no matter how righteous they seem.
Analyse the quotation - “___________ blasphemies”
Startling
Religious imagery
Jekyll’s actions are described as being blasphemies as he created Hyde which goes against the idea of man being created in God’s image, thus Jekyll is attempting to be like God and is seen to be blasphemous by society. This could also be symbolic of Hyde taking over Jekyll and breaking him due to Myers’ multiplex personality disorder and thus Jekyll is doing unnatural things due to the stress created by Hyde.
Analyse the quotation - “___ is not truly ___ but truly two”
Man, one
Metaphor
Clear depiction of duality, this could be a coping mechanism for the evil he has created and him saying that everyone contains evil so he shouldn’t be ostracised. His justification of evil and sin demonstrates his lack of virtues like humility. This could link to Myers’ multiplex personality disorder as his mind has change so much due to Hyde’s presence that he views it as normal.
Analyse the quotation - “__________ mine”
Irrvocably
Possesive
Jekyll’s attachment towards Hyde’s younger aspects makes him believe he has control over him. In this way, Hyde’s pleasures are presented as akin to a drug, which all addicts believe they can control, but respected gentlemen at this time would argue that sin always controls the sinner unless they stop. This could be a sign of Jekyll’s delusion at this point in the novella.
Analyse the quotation - “Jekyll had more than a ________ interest, Hyde had more than a son’s __________”
Father’s, indifference
Metaphor
Not only does this demonstrate how Hyde is younger, it could be a metaphor for the idea that Jekyll wats to live through Hyde, like how a father’s legacy wants to live on through his son. The fact that Jekyll feels attached to Hyde, which is a representation of sin, foreshadows his downfall and lack of control, as a contemporary reader would argue holding onto sin guarantees going to hell.
‘I will ______ set ____ on him again’
Never, eyes
Euphemism/dramatic irony
Jekyll, whilst Utterson is unaware, wants to rid himself of Hyde after the murder of Sir Danvers Carew.
This shows the longlasting effect of giving into sin and the irony of societal views, as he would praise Jekyll for this, despite it being his fault.
‘lost __________ in myself’
confidence
He seems to have lost control of Hyde, but he is unable to fully confess this to Utterson as it would compromise his identity. Utterson is the only person he trusts enough to do this.
‘two hands are in many _______ ___________’
points, identical
Dramatic irony
We know they are the same person, the similiarity between the natures of Jekyll and Hyde could indicate that their natured are more close to each other than they would have thought.
‘lifted his ________ hands to ___’
clasped, God
Religious imagery
Jekyll, as a result of the effect of sin, feels he has to repent as Hyde has taken over.
‘___ of liberty’
sea
metaphor
at the beginning of the novella he felt Hyde was a way of him being let go of the restraints of orignal sin but he ends up trapped within him
‘younger, _________ , lighter’
happier
He feels Hyde is a way of reinvigorating his sense of happiness and joy through being let go of sin.
‘_______ with my duality of ________’
cursed, purpose
He feels trapped within the purpose of fulfilling Hyde’s desires.
‘ordinary ______ sinner’
secret
he feels his sins are kept from God, or perhaps not, since he doesn’t receive immediate retribution.
‘lay _____ in his flesh’
caged
Jekyll is trapped within Hyde and loses control, which could be representative of the lack of control humans have over sin
‘felt it _______ to be born’
struggle
He feels Hyde is trying to break free of Jekyll’s grasp and that he is succeeding.
