Why is Hyde a representation of evil?
Mr Hyde is a manifestation of repression, indulging in immoral activity amorally. He also has many physical qualities associated with violence.
Why is Dr Jekyll a representation of good?
He is a respected scientist, pillar of society. His philantropy and warm attitude embodies this. Jekyll’s internal conflict and fascination with the duality of man lead to the creation of Hyde.
‘deadly nausea and a horror of the spirit that cannot be exceeded at the hour of birth or death’
This illustrates the pain and turmoil experienced during the transformation and a representation of the effects of sin.
‘Man is not truly one but truly two’ ‘thorough and profound duality of man’
Man has an innate division of good and evil, id vs superego or original sin vs pureness of heart. This shows the contemporary view of appearance is flawed.
What are the id, superego and ego?
Id - primitive and instinctual part of the mind containing evil.
Ego - balance between id and superego
Superego - person’s moral conscience.
These come from a theory from Sigmund Freud.
