The oxymoron used delineates the depraved nature of Hyde who had no compulsions over harming the child, The adverb “calmly” increasingly makes it revolting for the reader. This is reinforced with the use of “hellish” which has connotations to evil and emphasises the severity and brutality of the incident and illustrates how callous he was. Already the reader becomes aware of Hyde’s cruelty and vicious nature. even in harming an innocent child. This brutal incident foreshadows the violence and evil that Hyde continues to wreak as the novel progresses.
“Like some damned juggernaut”
A Juggernaut is known for its enormous size and its destructiveness, there it is paradox that a “little man” can be described as a ‘Juggernaut’. It’s yet another example of duality.
