Forces and Elasticity Flashcards

Q

Can an object be compressed if only one force is acting on it?

A

No, when only one force acts on an object it will accelerate and move. Two forces are required to keep it still so it can be deformed.

Q

What is missing from this equation for the elastic potential energy in a spring?
elastic potential energy = 0.5 x (extension)². Give the full name, not the symbol.

A

Spring constant, the full equation is elastic potential energy = 0.5 × spring constant × (extension)2.
