jekyll and hyde Flashcards
an impression of deformity
hyde is not the creation of god but of jekyll he is deformed and cannot be in gods likeness and is imperfect so gives an impression of deformity because human being aren’t yet used to understanding what an ungodly human being looks like, someone creating outside of gods will and the abuse of science
dehumanisation
a chocolate pall lowered over heaven
pathetic fallacy. ‘pall’ meaning dense cloud, but also the shroud placed over one’s face in death. mirrors death of carew. heaven has been consumed by an ungodly force
damon and pythias
moral of myth is to sacrifice yourself for a friend. therefore the professional conflict between lanyon- good doctor juxtaposed with jekyll- bad doctor shows lanyon is sacrificing himself to help his friend in need
amen poole
juxtaposed with jekylls decent into evil, ego driven blasphemy. we can see how only a christian remains inside the church and can use the holy words ‘amen’ and is not something that jekyll can do and hyde would never think of.
assume like a thick coat that of edward hyde
jekylls losing battle is consuming him. the cloud is cloaking the real person causing a separation between him and god which will be final.
