Jejunum and ileum (Dave's notes) Flashcards
Describe the Jejunum relative to the ileum
- Wider bore
- thicker walls, “double” walled
- lies in the upper part of abdomen (more proximally)
- contributes approximately 2/5ths of length
Describe the Ileum relative to the jejunum
- Narrower bore
- thinner walls
- lower reachers have an antimesenteric border of elongated whitish plaques which are aggregaed lymphoid follicles (= peyer’s patches)
- lies in the lower part and down into the pelvis
- comprises approximately 3/5th of length,
What is the blood supply of the jejunum?
- From the SMA
- single arcades which give off straight arteries
- These arteries are long and narrowly spaced for the jejunum
What is the blood supply of the ileum?
- From the SMA
- with 3-5 arcades and shorter more widely spaced straight arteries than the jejunum
How does the mesentary differ between these two sections of small bowel?
There is more fat in the mesentary of the ileum than the jejunum
What is the lymphatic drainage of the ileum and jejunum?
Via the SM nodes
What is the nerve supply of the jejunum and ileum?
Parasympathetic and sympathetic
What is the course and role of the parasympathetic supply to the ileum and jejunum?
The parasympathetic supply travels via vessels and normally augments peristaltic activity
What is the course and role of the sympathetic supply to the ileum and jejunum?
The sympathetic supply is a vasoconstrictor and inhibits peristalsis peristalsis, and transmits pain which is usually felt in the umbilical region. Course??
