Fascia of the posterior abdominal wall (Dave's notes) Flashcards
Describe the fascia of the posterior abdominal wall
The posterior abdominal wall muscles are covered by a dense and unyielding fascia which provides a firm fixation for peritoneum and underlying viscera
Where is the psoas fascia attached?
Psoas fascia invests the surface and is attached to the vertebral bodies, fib ours arches and transverse processes
What is the clinical significance of the psoas fascia?
It retains the pus of an iliopsoas abscess
What forms the medial arcuate ligament?
A thickening of the psoas fascia from L1 body to transverse process
What passes beneath the medial arcuate ligament (does he mean median?)
The sympathetic trunk
What is the iliac fascia attached to?
The iliac fascia is attached to the bones at the margins of ?X?X? and to the inguinal ligament.
What does the iliac fascia form?
It forms the floor of the abdominal cavity, and extends as the femoral sheath but otherwise does not extend.
What is the lumbar fascia in continuity with? What constitutes the lumbar fascia?
The lumbar fascia is in continuity with the thoracic fascia. Three layers of fascia enclose two muscle compartments.
What region do the anterior and middle layers of the lumbar fascia occupy?
The lumbar region.
What region does the posterior layer of the lumbar fascia occupy?
This occupies the lumbar region but extends up to the lower part of the neck and below to the dorsal surface of the sacrum
What occupies the anterior layer of the lumbar fascia?
Quadratus lumborum
What occupies the posterior layer of the lumbar fascia?
Erector spinae
Gerota and Zuckerkandl’s fascia, which is anterior and which is posterior
Anterior - Gerota
Posterior - Zuckerkandl’s
