Assimilation
Applying an old Schema to new objects or problems
Accommodation
Modifying old Schema to fit a new object or problem
Equilibration
The establishment of harmony or balance between the two (assimilation and accommodation). key to intellectual growth
Four stages of intellectual development
1) sensorimotor stage
2) pre operational stage
3) concrete operations stage
4) formal operations stage
Sensorimotor stage
From birth to almost 2 years- reacts to sensory stimuli through reflexes and other responses.
Preoperational stage
1 1/2 - 7 years. Develops language; can represent objects mentally by words another symbols; can respond to objects that are remembered but not present.
Concrete operations
7 to 11 years. Understand conservation of mass, number, and volume; can reason logically with regard to concrete objects that can be seen or touched
Formal operations
11 years onward. Can reason logically about abstract and hypothetical concepts; develops strategies; plans actions in advance
