Who is Jean Piaget and what is he known for?
Jean Piaget is a philosopher who believed in the HIGHSCOPE method of learning in children. He believed that children are curious and are driven by this curiosity.
What is HIGHSCOPE?
Highscope is a concept of learning where Piaget believed that children learn by doing, and they take in their experiences to learn.
What are the 3 Cognitive Stages of of Play?
Disequilibrium - an uncomfortable state where new information challenges one’s current beliefs, knowledge, and assumptions.
Assimilate - children will try to assimilate new information and find out how to incorporate this into their current thinking system.
Accommodate - children will modify their beliefs and thinking.
What are the stages to the Theory of Cognitive Development?
- Sensorimotor (0-2 years)
- Preoperational (2-7 years)
- Concrete Operational (7-11 years)
- Formal Operational (11 years to adulthood)
What are some things that may occur in the sensorimotor (0-2 years) stage?
- developing through senses
- simple reflexes
- curious
- becomes aware at 4 months
- early language development
- develop habits
- learn by trial and error
What are some things that occur during the Preoperational (2-7 years) stage?
- learn to speak
- drawings may have symbolic meaning
- ask questions (birth of primitive reasoning)
- egocentric (all about me!)
- ability to represent objects with images and words
- imagination
What are some things that may occur in the Concrete Operational (7-11 years) stage?
- can draw conclusions, make generalizations
- logical reasoning
- new mental abilities
- can solve conservation problems (notices two things may be the same)
What are some things that may occur in the Formal Operational (11 years to adulthood) stage?
- think rationally about abstract concepts
- abstract thoughts (politics, morals)
- Deeper understanding of morality
- understand why people do things
- prioritize
- logical reasoning
- future planning
- reasonably ask and think “what if?”
