Jean Donaldson - Impulse control Flashcards
Wich impulse control exercises are valuable to teach a dog?
Down-Stay and Sit-Stay. Down-stay on mat. Leave It. Wait. Loose Leash Walking. Moving Wait.
What is the rule to always remember regarding payment method?
Position pay always!!! Also if lose treat on floor.
What are the big ticket parameters in operant condiioning and what is the order in which they should be used?
Distraction(first), distance, duration(last)
Why is the chosen order of the parameters in operant conditioning important?
Order important for best, most efficient rate of reinforcement.
Why should you train increase distraction before duration?
Duration = Rate killer: 15sec stay, maximum rate of reinforcement 4min. Assumes gets every trial right + no latency between trials. By contrast, can get 10, 12, 15 close-up, brief distraction reps/min. Can also cover modest distances quickly.
Why would you want to do the quick-to-recycle reps early in the training process?
Have to do distraction + distance anyway. Might as well get quick-to-recycle reps early on. Leave rate-eating parameter for intermediate. = Smart, strategic!
What rule should you follow during impulse control training especially?
Be strict! Use thought police timing, preempt what think would have been error = Avoid rewarding intention to break stay. Better to be strict. Pay off if don’t try manufacture winner trials.
When it comes to feeding behaviors, what are dogs philosophy in life?
Significant selection history as opportunistic scavengers. Regurgitation reflex = Eat-first-regurgitate later philosophy of life.
In what exercise is it good to not use the standard position feed payment and why?
Loose leash walking. Good for skill development to learn training with goal itself as motivation.
