Jealousy Takes Over Flashcards
Lines 5-6
Enjambement
Omnis
Completely overwhelmed
Omnes and eripit
There’s attention drawn to them because omnes is at the end of the line and eripit is at the beginning of the next line
How are lines 5-6 strange?
Uses hyperbaton: unusual word order
You’d expect omnes to be next to sensul
Eripit
Has a natural emphasis, is a strong word, draws attention as it is the first word on the line, the force of the “e” sound at the start makes the word stronger
What happens on line 6?
There’s an abrupt change in tone, this shows the effect seeing Lesbia has on him
Tintinant
Onomatopoeic
Lines 9-12
List of the effects seeing Lesbia has on him
Lumina nocte
Catullus is blinded by her
Otium…otio….otium
Polyptoton and anaphora/repetition of the same word but different forms, shows that leisure is bad, emphasises that he must keep busy as he has too much time to overthink otherwise
Last stanza
Doesn’t really fit with the rest of the poem, is a controversy between scholars and people studying Latin whether or not this stanza is part of this poem
What is the importance of “superare”?
Overtaking –> hubristic –> arrogance, the man is not on the level of gods, he is above them (links to “par esse”)
Lines 1 and 2
Ille- anaphora
“Flamma”
Links to adrenaline, harsh sound
“Sonitu suopte”
Sibilance
