Jarvis Chapter 2 Health Promotion in the Context of Health Assessment Flashcards
Primary prevention
People and populations are prevented from becoming ill, sick, or injured in the first place. Refers to health promotion.
Secondary prevention
Early detection of disease, before symptoms emerge. (ex. PAP test, lipid profile, mammography).
Tertiary prevention
The prevention of complications when a condition or disease is present or has progressed.
“Moving upstream”
Focusing on the root causes of health conditions and taking action to avoid a problem before it occurs; the hallmark of primary prevention.
Health disparities
Occur when the combination and interaction of the social determinants of health result in differences in health status between segments of the population.
Health inequities
Result when health disparities are avoidable, but outside the control of individuals.
WHO set out 5 principles of health promotion
- Health promotion involves the population as a whole in the context of their everyday lives.
- Health promotion is directed toward action on the social determinants of health.
- Health promotion combines diverse but complementary methods.
- Health promotion seeks to achieve effective and concrete public participation.
- Health promotion is nurtured and enabled by health care providers, particularly those in primary health care.
