most people lived in rural areas away from cities. local daimyo kept order. most rural people worked the land as tenant farmers. they paid the rent with crops. long as they. kept renting the daimyo usually let them run their own affairs. village assembly mad most local decisions
how did the economy grow
farmers produced more crops thanks to improved tools and techniques. craftworkers made more goods to meet the demands of farmers warriors and wealthy daimyo. merchant class arose to carry on the increased trade in gods merchants often set up markets near temples within castle walls. towns sprang up from these sites and along important travel routes
what did china trade
japan exported raw materials such as copper, pearls, and wood. exchange for these items, Japan acquired books, silk, coins, and other manufactured goods. Japanese began to make goods for export including the worlds finest swords. shipment to china included 37,000 shiny samurai swords
status of women
earl Japanese history women headed clans and ruled as empresses. changed however as confucianism took root. men dominated confucian relationships. a women was expected to obey first her farther and then her husband
