Japan lies on boundary between Eurasian plate and Pacific plate. (Pacific was subducted) 
Destructive boundary. 
Magnitude 9. 
Earth was distorting 6km underwater. 
P-waves travelled 6km/s. 
EQ lasted 5minutes.
