Hit Florida on 25th.
Became category 5 storm on 28th August.
Causes:
175mph winds.
Impacts:
Storm surges reached over 6metres.
80% New Orleans was underwater - particularly affected as it is below sea level. Levees failed.
Over 1,800 deaths, 1,200 drowned in floods.
Oil facilities were damaged - petrol prices rose in UK and USA.
$150 billion damage.
Storm surges caused mass beach erosion.
Planning:
Man-made levees and flood walls.
Hurricane warnings days in advance - however it was predicted as a level 2 storm.
Mayor opened the super-dome for voluntary evacuation.
Responses:
Japan provided $800,000 worth of tents and emergency supplies.
Denmark provided water purification units.
Russia was first country to help - assistance and rescue.
Long term- improved levee and flood wall system.
