Sits on boundary between Caribbean and North American plate.
Conservative boundary - strike-slip
Magnitude 7
Earthquake’s epicentre was 25km west of capital.
LEDC- lack of planning & preparedness.

Impacts:
A
Impacts were particularly bad as buildings were not earthquake-resistant, and epicentre was so close to capital. Over 220,000 deaths. Hospitals collapsed. Airport & port damaged. 30,000 buildings collapsed.

A
Temporary field hospital set up.
Emergency rescue teams from Iceland.
Long term: improved water supply.
Free medical care.
Information was given about how to prepare for future disasters.
