Q

What difficulties did these people have?

A

They didn’t start planting crops right away, so there was not much to eat. In fact, during the Starving Time, people ate rats, tree bark, and acorns.

They also did not get along well with the Indians. They sometimes fought each other.

Since they lived near a very swampy area, there were mosquitoes that caused diseases. Many of the settlers died of this disease.
Sometimes, their houses got burned down.

Q

Why did settlers come to Jamestown?

A

Settlers came to Jamestown because they wanted to make profit by making money from stock and look for silver and gold. They knew that the Spanish had gotten rich by the New World Treasure and they believed that they could too. Others also came for adventure, to have a piece of their own land, and to convert Native Americans to Christianity.

Q

How did the English settlers overcome these difficulties?

A

They finally started planting gardens. They learned how to fish the way the Natives Americans did.

They became friends and traded. Pocahontas was especially helpful.

John Rolfe started planting tobacco that grew well in Virginia. The cash crop made the colony successful. They got more land by making the Indians leave their homes and move west.

They created the House of Burgesses where they could send representatives to make laws for the new colony.
