JA Net+ Ch11 Flashcards
What is Inter-Switch Link (ISL)Page 357
ISL is a way to explicitly tagging VLAN information onto an Ethernet frame. This tagging information allows VLANS to be multiplexed over a trunk link through the external encapsulation method.
IEEE 802.1q Page 358
Created by the IEEE as a standard method of frame tagging, IEEE 802.1q works by inserting a field into the frame to identify the VLAN.
The basic goals of ____ _______ ______ are to manage all configured VLANs across a switched internetwork and to maintain consistency throughout that network. Page 359
VLAN Trunking Protocol. (VTP)
What are some features of VTP?Page 359
·Consistent VLAN configuration across all switches in the network. ·Accurate tracking and monitoring of VLANS. ·Dynamic reporting of added VLANs to all switches in the VTP domain. ·Adding VLANs using plug-and-play.
What are the requirements for VTP to communicate VLAN indormation between switches?Page 359
·The VTP management domain name of both switches much be set the same. · One of the switches has to be configured as a VTP server.
VTP modes of operation.Page 360
Server (Default), Client ( receive info & receives & forwards updates). Transparent (don’t participate in VTP domain, but still forward VTP advertisements through configured trunk links).
Why do switches need IP addresses?Page 361
Switches need IP addresses for in-band management, which is used with your virtual terminals. Telnet, SSH, SNMP, and so on all require IP addresses to communicate with the switch, in-band, with the network.
Port _____ is configured to observe and allow only certain MAC addresses to associate with the specific port. Page 363
Port Fa0/3
Port Channeling/BondingPage 365
Refers to combining 2 to 8 Fast ethernet or gigabit ethernet ports together between two switches into one aggregated logical link to achieve more bandwidth and resiliency.
PAgPPage 365
Cisco’s proprietary port channel negotiation protocol that aids in the automatic creation of EtherChannel (Cisco’s port channeling term) links.
Port Mirroring/Spanning (SPAN/RSPAN)Page 368
Allows you to sniff traffic on a network when using a switch.
