Why can non-plenum cables become a major fire hazard? Pg 58
The insulation, when burned, gives off poisonous gas and the cable can act as a ‘wick’ that distributes the fire throughout the building quickly due to the cable being hidden in the plenum (the space between floors).
Plenum cable is fire retardant and does not give off poisonous fumes, if this is the case, why is non-plenum cable used at all? Pg 58
It’s significantly cheaper and plenum cable is only required in certain areas of the building to ensure safety
