JA Net+ Ch1 Flashcards
Bus TopologyChapter 1 Page 12
Bus is the most basic topology. Consists of two distinct and terminated ends, with each of it/s computers connecting to one unbroken cable with wire taps, but this didn’t work all that well so we began using drop cabled in their place.
Star TopologyChapter 1 Page 13
Computers are connected to a central point with their own individual cabled or wireless connections. The center spot is often inhabited by a device like a hub, switch, or an access point.
Ring TopologyChapter 1 Page 14
Each computer is directly connected to other computers within the same network.
Mesh TopologyChapter 1 Page 15
There’s a path from every machine to every other one in the network.
Point to Point TopologyChapter 1 Page 16
Direct connection between two routers or switches, giving you one communication path. Routers in a point to point can be linked by a serial cable, making it a physical network.
What is a drawback to peer-to-peer network sharing?Chapter 1 Page 16
It’s not very scalable.
What type of networks are most commonly seen in today’s WAN’s?Chapter 1 Page 17
Point-to-point.
Point to Multipoint TopologyChapter 1 Page 17
Consists of a succession of connections between an interface on one router and multiple destination routers. one point of connection to multiple points of connection.
What are some of the most important questions to ask oneself when selecting which type of network to rely upon?Chapter 1 Page 19
What is budget? How much fault tolerance and security do I need?Is this network going to quickly grow? Will I need to quickly and easily reconfigure often? How scalable does my network need to be?
Backbone vs SegmentsChapter 1 Page 20
The network backbone is what all of the segments and servers connect to and what gives your network structure. Segments are any small section of a network that may be connected to, but actually isn’t a piece of the backbone.
T/FIn a bus topology, data is transmitted to all computers in the network where they can see it? Chapter 1 Page 13
False. Data flows through the computers but only the computer it’s addressed to actually receives it.
What is the single point of failure in a star topology?Chapter 1 Page 14
The hub or central device.
What technology at an ISP might still use a ring topology?Chapter 1 Page 15
SONET.
How many connections must be connected in a population of 10 computers in a mesh topology?Chapter 1 Page 16
- The amount of cabling is why most corporate LANs haven’t use them, because they were so complicated to manage.
What is a hybrid topology?Chapter 1 Page 18
A combination of two or more types of physical or logical network topologies working together in the same network.
