J5.6 Jewish beliefs about family life in different Jewish communities Flashcards
Religious teaching on the roles and responsibilities of men and women
In traditional Judaism, men and women have different but complementary roles.
Men’s role
Responsible for studying the Torah and leading prayers in the synagogue.
Women’s role
Responsible for maintaining the home and nurturing children. Proverbs 31:10-31 describes the ideal Jewish woman as hardworking and devoted to her family.
Men + Women’s role in progressive jews
In more progressive Jewish communities, men and women share responsibilities equally.
Strength of traditional roles
Strength: Traditional roles emphasise family stability and respect for G-d’s design.
Weakness of traditional roles
Weakness: Some may see traditional roles as outdated or limiting.
Religious teaching on nurture of the young
Children are seen as blessings from G-d, and parents have a duty to teach them about Jewish faith and traditions. Deuteronomy 6:7 commands parents to teach children about G-d’s laws.
Religious teaching on care of the elderly
Caring for the elderly is a mitzvah (commandment), and respect for parents is part of the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:12). Jewish families often care for elderly relatives at home, showing honour and gratitude for their wisdom.
Strength of religious teachings on nurture of young and care of elderly
Strength: Promotes strong family bonds and intergenerational support.
Weakness of religious teachings on nurture of young and care of elderly
Weakness: Modern challenges, like balancing work and care, can make these duties difficult.
Different Jewish attitudes to marriage
Marriage is highly valued as a sacred bond blessed by G-d, often seen as a way to fulfil G-d’s command to “be fruitful and multiply” (Genesis 1:28).
Different Jewish attitudes to divorce
Divorce is permitted in Judaism but only as a last resort. A get (divorce document) must be given by the husband to the wife.
Different Jewish attitudes to Remarriage
Some Orthodox Jews believe remarriage should only happen after receiving a get.
Reform Jews often take a more flexible approach to remarriage and divorce, focusing on personal happiness and well-being.

Strength: Provides clear guidance on maintaining family relationships.
Weakness of different Jewish attitudes to marriage/divorce/remarriage
Weakness: Divorce and remarriage rules can sometimes create difficulties, especially for women seeking a get.
