Q

Gauge needles

A

Smaller the gauge number the bigger than needle and bigger the gauge the smaller the needle.

For rapid emergency fluid administration, blood products, or anesthetics, a large needle (e.g., 14-, 16-, 18-, or 19-gauge) is used.

For standard IV fluid infusion, a 20- or 22-gauge needle is used.

If the client has very small veins, a 24- to 25-gauge needle is used.
