Butterfly wing tipped needle
Infiltration common, can be used for elderly and children with small veins
Gauge needles
Smaller the gauge number the bigger than needle and bigger the gauge the smaller the needle.
For rapid emergency fluid administration, blood products, or anesthetics, a large needle (e.g., 14-, 16-, 18-, or 19-gauge) is used.
For standard IV fluid infusion, a 20- or 22-gauge needle is used.
If the client has very small veins, a 24- to 25-gauge needle is used.
Microdrip chamber
60 gtt/mL

Steps for preparing an IV
clamp the tubing, attach the spike end of the tubing to the IV bag, and then prime the tubing to remove air from the tubing and IV system.
