IV. THE SECOND COMING OF CHRIST Flashcards

1
Q

What is the importance of Christ’s Coming?

A
  • Christ’s Coming is mentioned more than 300 times in the New Testament; on the average of once in every twenty-five verses.
  • In Paul’s epistles, more than 50 verses are referenced to the Second Advent. It has been said that there are eight times more verses concerning the Second Coming of the Lord than there are those that concern His First Coming.
  • In five New Testament passages the believer’s posture is said to be that of WAITING for the Coming of the Lord. 1 Thess. 1:9-10; Rom. 8:23-25; 1 Cor. 1:7; Gal. 5:5; James 5:7
  • So important is the Second Coming to the church, that it is called the Blessed Hope. Tit. 2:13

Q

What is the hope of the Second Coming?

A

The hope of the Second Coming was connected by Jesus
with both ordinances of the church. The Apostles were
commanded to make disciples, baptizing them and teaching them with the assurance of His presence until the end of the age.

Q

What is the Time of His Coming?

A
  • Jesus said regarding the time of His Return.
  • Some scholars contend that Jesus and His disciples expected His coming to be within the first generation.

Since the parable was about the coming of the kingdom, the term “long time” seems to hint of a considerable delay in the Coming.

Jesus also said, Matt. 24:14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

When the Thessalonian church became upset by the belief
that the Great Tribulation had already begun, Paul exhorted them not to be soon shaken in mind.

  • There are clear indications that the Lord’s return would not occur until after an extended period of evangelization, and the Church was taught to be ready for an any-moment appearance of the Heavenly Bridegroom. Mat. 24:14; Matt 24:36; Matt 24:42
  • The Church certainly is not to sit by passively waiting for a set day, which will end this dispensation. 2 Pet. 3:11-12
  • The Church is working together with the Lord to accomplish His work, which must be done before He returns in glory.
