IV anaesthetic drugs Flashcards
MOA of propofol
GABA receptor agonist
(GABA- inhibitory compound)
2 pros of using propofol
- rapid onset on anaesthesia
- anti-emetic
2 cons of using propofol
-rapidly metabolised (with little accumulation of metabolites)
- moderate myocardial depression (hypotension)
MOA of sodium thiopentone
GABA R agonist
drug of choice for rapid induction and why
sodium thiopentone
- because highly lipid soluble so quickly affects the brain
5 negatives of sodium thiopentone
- rapid build up of metabolites
- myocardial depression
-little analgesic effect
-unsuitable for maintainence infusion
-laryngospasm
ketamine MOA
NMDA receptor antagonist
when can ketamine be used
induction of anaesthesia
3 pros of ketamine
-strong analgesic
-little myocardial depression (no hypotension)
-can be used in trauma
1 con of ketamine
may induce dissociative anaesthesia resulting in nightmares
1 pro of etomidate
cardiac safety - little haemodynamic instability / used in haemodynamic instability
4 cons of etomidate
-no analgesic properties
-adrenal suppression
-unsuitable for maintaining sedation
-post-op vomiting is common
4 IV anaesthetic drugs
propofol
sodium thiopentone
ketamine
etomidate
