IUPA running thread Flashcards
difference between ischaemic stroke and TIA
TIA - temporary reduction in blood flow to part of the brain
- ischaemia with no infarction
- no lasting effects
Stroke - reduction in blood flow to the brain resulting in ischaemia and infarction
- lasting effects and is very severe
where does the nasopharynx start and end?
base of skull to soft palate
forehead muscle
clinical rel?
occipitofrontalis
forehead sparred in stroke
why is forehead sparred in stroke
facial nerve receives dual cortical supply to upper half of face from both sides of hemisphere (NOT to do with blood supply)
- occipitofrontalis innervated
why is forehead NOT sparred in facial nerve palsy
the lesion is after the nerve exits the brain stem therefore all of the nerve is affected despite its dual input
