When can employees access and use Victoria Police information?
Only when they have a demonstrable, legitimate business need which is directly related to the performance of their current duties
When can Vicoria Police release personal information in accordance with the Privacy and Data Protection act?
When it:
- reasonably believes that the disclosure is necessary to lessen or prevent either a serious and imminent threat to an individual’s life, helath, safety or welfare; or a serious threat to public health, public safety, or public wlefare.
- suspects unlawful activity has been, is being or may be engaged in, and discloses personal information as a necessary part of it sinvestigationor in reporting its concerns to relevant persons or authorities
- is required or authorised by or under law
Who can authorise the notification of an amployer that an employee has been charged?
Work Unit Manager
Who can authorise the notification of an employer about their employee if the employee has not been charged?
Inspector
When shoudl the Victorian Institute of Teaching be notified regarding a registered teacher?
They should be immeidately notified if a registered teacher has been charged with, found guilty or cimmitted for trial for a sexual, violent or drug offence.
When can police notify the Director of Housing of drug activity on a public housing premises?
Whena DPCSA warrant has been executed on a DHHS premises or common area which has resulted in charges laid or a conviction for:
- trafficking or attmpted trafficking a DOD
- supplied a DOD to a person under 18
- possessed a preparatory item for the purpose of trafficking a DOD
- possessed a tablet press or precursor chemical
- cultivated a narcortic plant
How is a notification of illegal activity to be made to the Director of Housing?
Complete a Notification of Illegal Acticity form and forward to the Work Unit Manager for approval
What are employees to do whent hey require an IT password reset?
contact a sergeant who can attest to their identity to complete a password reset (Form 1023) on their behalf and submit to the Helpdesk for action
Who will be the nominated Police Spokesperson to the media following an incident involving police that results in a death?
an Asisstant Commissioner or above, or member nominated by them
Who will be the Police Spokesperson to the media for an incident involving police that is a serious injury/illness, but, non-fatal incident?
a Divisional Commander of above, or a member nominated by them
Who can make comments to the media at a crime scene?
the police commander in charge at the scene, in consultation with the media unit
We cannot release medical details of a person without their express permission. A general description can be given to the media. What are the acceptable general descriptions of an injured person’s condition?

The location of a person’s injuries can be described in general terms n comments to the media. Provide examples

CCTV, In car video etc which relates to current matters and could assist with unsolved crimes may be released to the media. What permissions are required?
The owner’s permission and the approval of an Inspector or above.
Who can police provide vehicle collision information to?
- a person who is injured as a result of a vehicle collision
- a person whose property is damaged or destroyed by a collision
- personal or authorised representative of either of these parties
Where a person requests vehicle collision information over the counter, what are they required to do?
- provide relevant dicumentation as outline on the Application for Victoria Police Vehicle Accident Information - Over the Counter Request
- outline the reasons they are seeking such information
What are the reasons a person may obtain vehicle collision information?
- obtain legal advice
- recover any loss, damage or costs incurred as a result of the collision
- determine a claim of insurance or compensation; or
- investigate the collision for any of the above purposes
What information is able to be released for over the counter requests for vehicle collision information?
Names, addresses and registration details of drivers involved in the collision. These can only be released if a TIS report has been approved.
What is a member required to do when they receive an over the counter request for vehicle collision information?
- advise that only limited information is available. Where they seek further information they should make a request to the Accident Records Office
- confirm that a collision has been reported and the circumstances of the collision outlined in the report are consistent with the request
- ensure a TIS report has been completed
- ensure the person completes the Form 1146 and Stat Dec
- record the requested information on the Form 1146 and provide a copy to the requesting person
- inform the person that the information may only be used for an authorised purpose
- complete the remaining fields on the Form 1146 and forward all documentation to the ARO for recording and filing
