What Jews did
They became tailors and made affordable clothes.
Jews Financial
Some Jews made money however the vast majority of Jews lived in poverty. Glasgow Board of Guardians were helping the poor Jews.
Jews Eduction
Jews were welcome to education which meant the parents could give their children a better chance to live a better more rich life.
Jews went into further education where many went into medicine.
Irish Catholics integration
Many changed their surnames and converted too Protestantism to fit in.
Irish workers
‘strike-breakers’ as they were willing to work for less than Scots. Protestant organisations such as ‘Scottish Reformation Society’
Catholic Education
1918 the education (Scotland) act allowed Catholic immigrants schools into the state system funded through education rates, so the Catholic community no longer had to raise money for it.
Italian Work
Opened fish and chip shops as well as ice-cream parlours, which gave Scots alternative places to go instead of the public house and temptations of alcohol.
Italians integration
The Scots liked the Italians as they kept to themselves as they wanted to return home and started their own business so weren’t stealing the Scots work.
Italians attacked
shops, clubs were attacked by Scots in 1940 due to Mussolini declaring war on Britain. A club in Glasgow was called “La Casa del Fascio.”
Lithuanians Jobs
Housing was offed for those who took jobs in the coal and steel industry. many of these jobs were filled with Lithuanians.
Lithuanians Integration
Many of them changed their surnames from Sharmatits to Smith to fit in.
Lithuanians WWI
men between 18-24 got the choice to fight with the Uk or get deported back to Russia. 700 joined the British Army and 1100 returned to Russia.
