Why highland Scots migrated
social isolation as highlands were small communities so not many people lived close by that could be seen regular.
Potato Famine
1846, 15000 Highlanders at rick of starvation, many moved to lowlands to get better jobs so could feed their families.
Why lowlands attracted highlanders
easier access to social activities such as music halls and football games.
more job opportunities due to increased population, urban life over long hours and few holidays.
Living Conditions
Black houses no windows or chimneys, and often lived in house with livestock for warmth.
slums were still considered better than black houses, migration due to expanding housing in Glasgow and Edinburgh.
Highland Clearance
It was more profitable to keep animals on the land than crofters, so were forced to move to places such as Ullapool.
Fishing
Loss of income as East Europeans markets stoped due to Russian Revolution, women who gutted the fish needed to try and find new jobs.
Industrial Revolution
Handloom weavers moved to Glasgow for work as they were made redundant due to machines.
Why England attracted Scots
Better jobs for higher wages not too far from family in Scotland.
Scot were successful in the medical profession as Scots Uni produced high quality graduates, and were in high demand for medical schools in Liverpool and Birmingham.
Essex
Was well know for farmers migrating. 22% of farmers were immigrants many of which were Scots.
Why Scots moved aboard
Scots could make a day and a half then what they made in a week. Canada, Australia were desperate for skilled tradespeople as they wanted to develop their new countries.
Education
The Education Act of 1872 made all children between 5-13 the right to free education. it was easier accessed in cities.
