Isotopes/ Ionisation Flashcards

1
Q

What is an isotope?

A

Isotopes are atoms from the same element with the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons.
* different mass numbers*

Q

What is ionisation?

A

Ionisation is when an atom loses (or gains/ in chemistry) an electron to become charged.

Q

How does ionisation occur?

A
  1. ) Electron can rush past atom giving electrons in atom energy to move to higher energy level.
  2. ) Light absorption (excitation) light gives electron enough energy to move to higher energy level.
    * energy level is further away from nucleus*

Q

Explain fluroscene with electrons

A
  • When UV light is absorbed, the electrons in the atoms are excited and move to higher energy levels.
  • When electrons fall back down (relax), visible light is emitted, which is why fluroscence occurs.
