Isotopes/ Ionisation Flashcards
1
Q
What is an isotope?
A
Isotopes are atoms from the same element with the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons.
* different mass numbers*
2
Q
What is ionisation?
A
Ionisation is when an atom loses (or gains/ in chemistry) an electron to become charged.
3
Q
How does ionisation occur?
A
- ) Electron can rush past atom giving electrons in atom energy to move to higher energy level.
- ) Light absorption (excitation) light gives electron enough energy to move to higher energy level.
* energy level is further away from nucleus*
4
Q
What happens in light emission?
A
- The electron loses energy and goes closer to the nucleus. Emitting light.
5
Q
Explain fluroscene with electrons
A
- When UV light is absorbed, the electrons in the atoms are excited and move to higher energy levels.
- When electrons fall back down (relax), visible light is emitted, which is why fluroscence occurs.
