Isotopes Flashcards
What defines isotopes?
atoms with same number of protons but different number of neutrons, chemically alike but varying in atomic mass numbers
What is the atomic mass of an element?
the no. protons and no. neutrons
what is isotopic fractionation?
the physical separation of isotopes into different reservoirs
What type of isotope evaporates more easily?
lighter isotopes
Name the 3 different types of isotopic fractionation?
- evaporation
- kinetic
- equilbrium
whats the link between the weight of isotopes and bonds?(how does mass difference affect behaviour)
Light isotopes form weaker bonds so heavy isotopes form stronger bonds
Whats the difference between stable and unstable isotopes?
stable isotopes do not undergo radioactive decay whereas unstable do
What is fractionation dependant on?
temperature
What is an example of kinetic fractionation?
photosynthesis
which type of isotope is removed more quickly?
heavy isotopes condensates and are removed more quickly
