Isotopes Flashcards
What are isotopes
They are atoms that have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons in their nuclei
What is the atomic number
The number of protons found in the nucleus of an atom. All atoms have the same number of protons in their nuclei
What is the relative atomic mass
This is the relative mass of an atom compared to all the other atoms in the periodic table. Its a ration and has no unit
What is the mass number
This is the relative mass of atoms. Its calculating from adding the number of protons (Ar=1) to the number of neutrons (Ar=1). Electrons a regarded as having amass of zero.
How do you calculate the average atomic mass from given isotopic abundances
(Mass of isotopes 1 x %abundances) + (Mass of isotopes 2 x %abundances) +(Mass of isotopes 3 x %abundances)
