Diffusion Flashcards
What is diffusion
It is the movement of particles from high concentration to pow concentration until an equilibrium is reached
What is concentration
It is how much of a specific thing there is in an area
What is the concentration gradient
It is the different between high concentration and low concentration
Why is diffusion passive
Become it doesnt need energy
In the experiment of lead nitrate and potassium iodide which one diffuses slower
Lead diffuses slower because is had a bigger mass
What is the word equation for this experiment
Lead nitrate + potassium iodide —>potassium nitrate + lead iodide
What happens is this experiment
The leas nitrate and potassium iodide each dissolve and begun to diffuse through the water. When the lead ions and iodide ions meet they react to form solid yellow lead iodide which precipitates out if solution.
What causes diffusion
Diffusion only happens in gases and liquids. Particles collide with each other and change direction. Eventually the particles are spread throught the whole container.
Diffusion also happens on its own
How does the Concentration gradient affect the rate of diffusion
The greater the gradient the faster the rate
Surface area for diffusion
The greater the surface area the faster the rate
Length of the diffusion pathway
The greater the length of the pathway the slower the rate
