Isomerism And Simple Reactions Of Organic Compounds Flashcards
Existence of possibility of isomers
Isomerism
Molecules or polyatomic ions with identical molecular formula but distinct arrangement of atoms
Isomers
Two types of isomers
Constitutional isomers and stereoisomers
Three types of constitutional isomers
Chain isomers, position isomers and functional isomers
Two types of stereoisomers
Enantiomers and diastereomers
Do not have plane of symmetry or not superimposable
Chiral molecules
Cannot be super imposed or not symmetry
Chiral objects
Can be superimposed or symmetry
Achiral objects
Molecules have the same molecular formula and sequence but differ in the three dimensional orientations
Stereoisomers
Type of stereoisomers are mirror images but are non superimposable
Enantiomers
Type of stereoisomers are non mirror images but are non superimposable
Diastereomers
An organic reaction that releases light and heat
Combustion reaction
Addition of an atom to an unsaturated bonds (triple bond to double bond double bond to single bond)
Addition Reaction
Two molecules are combined to form single molecule usually with the loss of a small molecule such as water
Condensation reaction
Esther molecules are broken to create a functional group of carboxylic acid and alcohol
Saponification reaction
