Isomer and Natural Gas also Petroleum Flashcards
Isomers
Compound with the same structure formula but different structural formulae called structure isomers.
What are two types of structure isomers
Chain isomerism and position isomerism
Chain isomerism
Structure of the carbon skeleton differs.
example butane has the same molecular formula as methyl propane but but has a unbranched chain and methyl-propane has a branched chain
Position isomerism
Position isomerism is the position of the function group differs.
Example: position has a double bond in pent-ene but different in pent-2-ene position.
Petroleum and natural gas
Petroleum ( curve oil) and natural gas are good natural sources of hydrocarbons
Natural gas is mainly methane. It also contains ethane, propane and butane.
Petroleum is a tick mixture of unbranded, branded, ring hydrogen carbon with some natural gas it also dissolved.
Fractional distillation of petroleum
Petroleum refining removal of impurities of hydrocarbons and having hydrocarbons mixture into a smaller group of hydrocarbons are called fraction
Each fraction consists of hydrocarbons having a limited range of molar mass and number of carbon atoms
Fractional distillation is carried by using fractionating column
