**STAVE 1 **
-The simile shows how isolated and alone Scrooge is in Stave One. However, the fact that oysters can produce pearls in the right conditions signals to the reader that with the right help, he could become philanthropicand valued in society.
-Low temperature/ ‘iced’ suggests his metaphorical coldness - he is cold-hearted.

-He has no companionship in Stave One
-He is not respected in societyand no one wants to chat to him as he is so unfriendly.
‘Scrooge took his melancholy dinner in his usual melancholy tavern’.
STAVE 1
Repetition of the adjective ‘melancholy’ shows how isolated he is in Stave One.
‘A lonely boy was reading near a feeble fire’
STAVE 2 **
Fricative alliteration of ‘feeble fire’ **insinuates clearly how much he **lacked warmth in his early life
- remember FIRE is the SYMBOL for generosity**.
‘I have been displaced by a another idol. A golden idol.’
STAVE 2 **
The metaphor ‘golden idol’ means that Belle has been replaced by Scrooge’s greed**and obsession with money.

STAVE 3
-Even those isolated in the mines, lighthouse still remember the joy of Christmas.
Scrooge crept towards it, trembling as he went; and following the finger, read upon the stone of the neglected grave his own name, Ebenezer Scrooge.’
STAVE 4
He recognises the need for redemption now as he is ‘trembling’ as he recognises if he does not change in the future he will die.
‘He had been sobbing violently in his conflict with the Spirit, and his face was wet with tears.’
STAVE 5
The phrase ‘sobbing violently’ shows his desire for redemption. He recognises where he went wrong.
‘No fog, no mist; clear, bright, jovial, stirring, cold; cold, piping for the blood to dance to; Golden sunlight’

This positive weather when he transforms highlights his transformation
