-It shows that Scrooge feels regret which is the first sign of transformation into a philanthropic man.
-After seeing the scenes of his past life, he feels regret for his lack of charity.
“If they would rather die,” said Scrooge, “they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population.

This links to Malthusian politics where Thomas Malthus believes that the poor should just die to solve issues as then there wouldn’t be such a drain on society which highlights how misanthropic and callous Scrooge is.

STAVE 2
These quotations show how Fezzwig exudes happiness and joy which teaches Scrooge that you do not have to be a horrible employer but can brighten people’s lives.

“Mr Scrooge!” said Bob; “I’ll give you Mr Scrooge, the Founder of the Feast!”
‘Oh, a wonderful pudding!’
STAVE 3
This shows despite their poverty how grateful and kind they are too all (even thanking Scrooge for the meal despite his horrid treatment of Bob).
-Dickens therefore it commenting on the
good morals of the poor.
‘A great many back-payments are included in it.’
STAVE 5
Scrooge says this to the portly gentleman showing his newfound philanthropic selfwho is devoted now to helping the poor.
‘I’ll raise your salary, and endeavour to assist your struggling family’

-Scrooge here recognises he wants to be more like Fezziwig (his previous employer from Stave Two) and help Bob Cratchit and his family
