Functional Requirements of ISM Code?
Every company is to develop, implement, and maintain a Safety Management System which includes:
- A safety and environmental protection policy
- Instructions and procedures to ensure safe operation of ships and protection of the environment in compliance with relevant legislation
- Defined levels of authority and lines of communication between, and amongst, shore and shipboard personnel
- Procedures for reporting accidents and non-conformities with the provisions of the code
- Procedures to prepare for and respond to emergencies
- Procedures for internal audits and management reviews

Masters Responsibility under ISM Code?
The company is to clearly define and document the Masters responsibility with regard to:
- Implementing the safety and environmental protection policy of the company
- Motivating the crew in observation of that policy
- Issuing appropriate orders and instructions in a clear and simple manner
- Verifying that specified requirements are observed
- Periodically reviewing the safety management system and reporting its deficiencies to the shore based management

What is a Document of Compliance?
A Document of Compliance is issued to a company by the administration, which is evidence that the company complies with the provisions of the ISM code. The validity is not to exceed 5 years, subject to annual verification. Can be withdrawn by the administration, if evidence of major non-conformities with the ISM Code. Only valid for ship types indicated on the document.
What is a Safety Management Certificate?
Is issued to a VESSEL by the Administration. Issued after verifying that the company and its shipboard management operate in accordance with the approved safety management system. Subject to intermittent verification. Should be withdrawn if evidence of major non-conformity. Not to exceed 5 years.

Safety Officer Duties?
- Ensure COSWP and company health & safety policies complied with
- Seek to improve the safety awareness amongst the crew
- Investigate accidents, dangerous occurrences and potential hazards
- Investigate health & safety crew complaints
- Conduct health & safety inspections once every 3 months
- Advise on statutory deficiencies, which may occur
- Keep a record book of accidents and dangerous occurrences
- Stop any work which may be dangerous
Safety familiarisation training
Communicate with other persons onboard on elementary safety matters and
understand safety information symbols, signs and alarm signals;
• Know what to do if:
o a person falls overboard;
o fire or smoke is detected;
o the fire or abandon ship alarm is sounded;
• Identify muster and embarkation stations and emergency escape routes;
• Locate and don lifejackets;
• Raise the alarm and have basic knowledge of the use of portable fire
extinguishers;
• Take immediate action upon encountering an injured person or other medical
emergency before seeking further medical assistance onboard;
• Close and open the fire, weather tight and watertight doors, other than those
for hull openings, fitted in the ship in which you are serving
