What is Barzakh?
In the Qur’an Barzakh is described as a holding place or barrier to keep the soul away from the body.
What is surah 55 and what does it tell us about Barzakh?
” He has let free the two bodies of flowing water , meeting together. Between them is a barrier which they do not transgress.” Soul and body, once together in the earthy life are no longer together.
Which angels are present in Barzakh?
Izrail - announces a person’s death. He claims the departed souls from this earth and stores them in Barzakh
Munkar + Nazir - Question the dead person to test their faith
What questions will Muslims be asked in Barzakh?
Who is your God?
Who is your Prophet
What is your religion?
They may also be asked in which direction the Kaaba is.
How do the questions show a just and merciful God?
If you answer with the Shahadah then you will be shown your place in heaven but if you fail then you will go to hell and beaten with clubs until this time
This shows mercy, as people are given scripture which tells them the answers to the questions.
What are Al-Ghazali’s 4 groups of people?
- Those that know God and answer the questions about faith correctly
—> Lovely creature will talk to them and they will see a garden - Those that did good deeds but were more concerned with materialism in life
—> They are shown hell, yet told they will wait in the garden - Those that cannot profess Islam or the Qur’an as their guide
—> Intermediate punishment - This group do not even know the answers and they will be beaten and visited by the shape of a loathsome animal.
