A

The first pillar of Islam is Shahadah. It is a special statement Muslims repeat many times a day. They whisper it into the ear of a new-born baby. They teach it to their children when they are old enough to learn it and Muslims hope it will be the last words to cross their lips before they die. The Shahadah is the declaration of faith in Allah.

The second pillar of Islam is Salah. This means prayer. It is every Muslim’s duty to pray five times a da. Salah does not have to be in a mosque - it can be anywhere as long as they begin with Wudu (washing before prayer), they have a prayer mat and they are facing towards Mecca.

Q

Name the last pillar of Islam and what it means.

A

The last pillar is Hajj and it is a pilgrimage. It is a journey to Mecca to take part in a very special ceremony which lasts three days. Every adult Muslim should go on Hajj at least once in their life. Some Muslims save for many years to be able to afford to go. Hajj shows that everyone is equal in the eyes of Allah. Everyone wears the same clothes and does the same things.
