Five Pillars of Islam
Repetition or recitation of the Creed: “There is no God but Allah; Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.”
Daily Prayer: prayer five times a day, dawn, midday, midafternoon, sunset and nightfall (prayer includes cleansing with water, hands, feet and face, prostration towards Mecca)
Almsgiving: 2.5-10% of one’s income
Fasting: during month of Ramadan, no eating, drinking, smoking or sexual relations during the daytime hours (belief is that Allah will forgive the sins of those who complete the fast)
Pilgrimage (hajj): Every Muslim is expected to make a pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in their lifetime. (visit the Zamzam well, the Ka’ba, sacrifice a sheep or goat on the 10th day & visit Medina)

Sunnis
They make up 85-90% of the Muslim population; Qur’an and hadith (words and actions of the prophet)
Shi’ites
They make up 10-15% of the Muslim population; Belief that Ali (Muhammad’s son in law) as successor as a leader; Believe in a Mahdi (Messianic figure); Prize martyrdom; 7ers and 12ers believe imams went into hiding and are waiting to return to Earth
