Ischemia Flashcards

1
Q

What is ischemia

A

Ischemia is the lack of sufficient oxygen in the brain, due to a cerebrovascular incident

Ischemia has sympoms that last 10-15 minutes

Q

FAST?

A

Face, arm, speech, time

Ask to smile, raise arm, form sentences. If the face sags or they can’t do the other things, they may have a stroke and time is very important

Q

How is stroke diagnosed?

A

After admission, a CT or MRIscan is done.

CT is good for haemorrhagic stroke, because it shows the damage. It takes to long for ischemic damage to show up

MRIis better for ischemic stroke because it can immediately visualize the lack of blood flow.

Q

What is the primary therapy?

A

Thrombectomy - catheterto remove the clotting

Thrombolysis to break the clotting - using rTPA to break down the fibrine and dissolve the clot

Induced hypothermia to slow down the metabolism and reduce damage
