Q

What is focal ischaemia seen with? How does it present? Tx?

A
  • seen with FCE, where there is direct embolisation of arteries within the spinal cord
  • presents as sudden onset focal dysfunction
  • no tx but in many cases there will be good resolution with conservative therapy
  • (consider focal ischaemia as a concussive injury)

What is global ischaemia seen with? How does it present? Tx?

A
  • seen with iliac thrombosis
  • basically the whole rear end of the animal is ischaemic
  • very common in cats, rare in dogs
  • should be obvious on CE: pain, pulseless, pale, paretic hindlimbs
  • usually secondary to cardiovascular disease in the cat (Cushing’s or kidneys in dogs), investigate and tx the cardiovascular dz and prognosis is dependent on that
