Compression Flashcards
1
Q
What does compression of the spinal cord lead to?
A
- a degree of dysfunction dependent of the degree of compression
2
Q
Which fibres are damaged more easily? Therefore what is lost first and last to recover following removal of compression?
A
- larger fibres are damaged more easily
- proprioception is lost first and is last to recover following removal of compression
3
Q
Tx/prognosis
A
- compression of the spinal cord doesn’t necessarily result in irreparable damage
- if compression is removed then full function can be achieved
- the length of time and severity of compression can affect outcome, but the prognosis in many cases is good
- if the spinal cord is compressed the best outcome is usually achieved by surgical decompression (but if combined with concussive may respond well to conservative management)
