Is matter around as pure 4 long Flashcards
What are the properties of metals ?
• They have a luster (shine). • They have silvery-grey or golden-yellow color. • They conduct heat and electricity. • They are ductile (can be drawn into wires). • They are malleable (can be hammered into thin sheets). • They are sonorous (make a ringing sound when hit). Examples of metals are gold, silver, copper
What are the properties of elements ?
• The number of elements known at present are more
than 100. Ninety-two elements are naturally occurring and the rest are manmade.
• Majority of the elements are solid.
• Eleven elements are in gaseous state at room
temperature.
• Two elements are liquid at room temperature–
mercury and bromine.
• Elements, gallium and cesium become liquid at a
temperature slightly above room temperature (303 K)
What are the differences Mixtures and Compounds ?
Mixtures
• Elements or compounds just mix together to form a
mixture and no new compound is formed
• A mixture has a variable composition.
• A mixture shows the properties of the constituent
substances.
• The constituents can be separated fairly easily by
physical methods.
Compounds
• Elements react to form new compounds.
• The composition of each new substance is always
fixed.
• The new substance has totally different properties.
• The constituents can be separated only by chemical
or electrochemical reactions.
