Is matter around as pure 1 short Flashcards
What is a concentration of a solution ?
The concentration of a solution is the amount
of solute present in a given amount of solution.
What are the types of pure substance ?
Substances can be classified either as elements or compounds.
Who first used the term element ?
Robert Boyle was the first scientist to use the
term element in 1661
What are the forms of elements ?
Elements can be normally divided into metals, non-metals and metalloids.
What are the properties of non-metals ?
• They display a variety of colors.
• They are poor conductors of heat and
electricity.
• They are not lustrous, sonorous or
malleable.
Examples of non-metals are hydrogen,
oxygen, iodine
What is a compound ?
A compound is a substance composed of two or more elements, chemically combined with one another in a fixed proportion.
What is a substance ?
A substance is a kind of matter that cannot be separated into other kinds of matter by any physical process
What is a pure substance ?
Pure substances are substances that are made up of only one kind of particle
What are metalloids and give examples ?
Some elements possess properties between those of metals and non-metals, they are called metalloids; examples are boron and silicon
